Dogs and Children

Even if you have children but don’t own a dog, you still need to know about dog-child interactions as your child can and most likely will meet dogs, be it at the park, in the street, at a friends house. Do you let your child race over to a dog, pet it, fling their arms around it, or have you taught your child dog etiquette?

At first glance the advice looks obvious; simple common sense you may say. How many families might read this and think to themselves of course we don’t let our child bother the family dog.

Microchipping News

Microchipping is back in the news again:

Update Your Pet's Microchip Details
The Association of Dogs and Cats Homes (ADCH) is urging owners to ensure their pets are microchipped and that their registered contact details are updated and correct.

Microchipping is a great way to permanently identify dogs and cats, but an owner can only be contacted and reunited with their missing pet if their registered details are up to date.

A microchip is a small electronic device the size of a grain of rice that is implanted under the animal’s skin.

Mystery Illness in Dogs

Since 2009 there have been increasing reports of dogs becoming sick within hours of walking in woodland, some dogs have died; symptoms include vomiting, fever, diarrhoea and lethargy.

The problem appears to be seasonal from August to November, and some areas (Sandringham, Sherwood Forest) have had more reports than elsewhere. The Animal Health Trust are monitoring cases that are reported and are asking dog owners to be particularly vigilant at contacting their vet if their dogs experience symptoms after walking in wooded areas.

Microchip to Protect

The following extract was taken from a newspaper in Cumbria where having had a dog microchipped was clearly a smart thing to do for one dog owner:

A PENSIONER has been reunited with her beloved dog, Honey, after it was taken in a burglary.
Barbara Whitham, 80, said she was delighted to see her prize-winning Yorkshire Terrier returned safe and sound after it was found wandering alone in a Bolton street.
“I couldn’t sleep I was so worried about her,” she said. “I kept thinking of her on her own and being scared so when we got the call to say she had been found I cried.

Dog Attacks on people increasing

It has been written in todays internet news that dog attacks are on the increase across the Uk.
This underlines an ever increasing legal, social and moral responsibility forALLdog owners to have their puppy's / dogs trainined by professional trainers who understand the psychology of dogs.:

The number of people admitted to hospital for dog injuriesis on the rise, NHS figures have shown.

In 2010/11, there were 6,120 hospital admissions resulting from dog injuries in England, according to data from the NHS Information Centre.

Water your Dogs

With the ever unpredictable weather in the Uk, from downpours to heatwaves, dogs should always be a consideration, especially when combining dogs with cars - yet another case of dogs dying in cars with the recent incident by a police officer at a dog training centre highlights that even professionals can get it wrong and most of us need timely reminders about the perils of heat to dogs!!

Dogs need a good supply of good clean water regardless of where they are to spend their time and enough water provided to compensate for that lost to natural body processes - sweat, urine, faeces and breath moisture.

Summer Pests

The British Veterinary Association (BVA) recently reported that the prevalence of ticks in dogs in Great Britain is higher than expected and that it is important to remember to treat your dog for ticks.
It is estimated that ticks infest up to 15% of dogs in the UK at any one time including species normally only found in Continental Europe.
If you are planning on using the Pet Passport scheme this year to take your dog(s) abroad, then speak to your vet about tick treatment or visit theBVA Animal Welfare Foundation

Scoop it Up

All dog owners across England, Wales and Northern Ireland have a legal (and moral) responsibility to clean up after their dogs.
Covered by the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005, fines of up to £75 per offence may be charged against an offending dog owner.
Poop Scoop Week is a Dogs Trust initiative that takes place every year in conjunction with Local Authorities across the UK. This year it will be held on the week beginning 25th July 2011.
Every year, Dogs Trust urges dog owners to pick up after their dog and help clean up our public spaces.
